At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
