EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
