RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
