They're Repeating to America What They Executed within Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater as well.

The apparent and direct reality that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities in US history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it imply acting as if the worst about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that genuine national faithful should be comfortable with.
